PART of Austin offers three different scholarships for eligible students. The Mitty Guerra Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $2,000.00, is awarded annually to a Hispanic woman residing in the Greater Austin area* who has shown determination in overcoming barriers to accomplish her educational goals. The Charles Wilson Hackett Memorial Scholarship of $2,000.00 is awarded to a graduate student for outstanding achievement in Latin American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. The Jeannie Hunter Hackett Memorial Scholarship of $2,000.00 is awarded to an outstanding Latin American undergraduate at The University of Texas at Austin. The deadline for the 2018 Jeannie Hunter Hackett Memorial Scholarship application is March 12, 2018. (See below for requirements.)

Scholarship Requirements
Mitty Guerra Memorial Scholarship

The Mitty Guerra Memorial Scholarship ($2000) is awarded to a Hispanic woman, resident of the greater Austin, Texas area*, who has experienced delays or setbacks in obtaining her education and who has shown determination in accomplishing her higher educational goals. The selection process is based on how this scholarship will make a difference in the applicant’s life. In reviewing applications, three (3) parts of the application are awarded points, for a maximum of 35 points. A minimum of 25 points is required for consideration. The applicant must provide a statement (of at least 500 words) describing the obstacles that she has had to overcome (past and present) to achieve her educational goals. The statement should address the applicant’s needs and circumstances; her family responsibilities; employment and financial resources; leadership and community activities; and goals.  Points are awarded based on the information provided below. Application criteria and point system:

  1. All parts of the application, including the online application, are complete (5 points).  5 pts = Excellent – application is clear and complete; 3 pts  = Good – application is complete; 0 pts = incomplete.
  2. A current letter of recommendation (10 points) describing applicant’s community, academic or job performance, her ethics, and character.  5 pts = Excellent; 4 pts = Very Good; 2 pts = Good; 1 pt = Average.
  3. A statement (20 points) of at least 500 words. The  applicant’s statement should describe the obstacles that she has had to overcome (past and present) to achieve her educational goals. The statement should include the applicant’s circumstances (4 points); family responsibilities (4 points); employment and financial resources (4 points); leadership and community activities (4 points); and educational goals (4 points).

Charles Wilson Hackett Memorial Scholarship

The Charles Wilson Hackett Memorial Scholarship ($2000) is awarded to an outstanding Latin American Studies graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). The selection process is based on academic achievement in Latin American Studies, honors received, level of community/campus activities, and likely impact of the scholarship on academic studies and career goals, including financial need. In reviewing applications, each criteria is awarded points, for a maximum of 35 points. A minimum of 25 points is required for consideration. The scholarship winner will be notified on or before March 30, 2018 via email.

Required, in addition to the online application:

  • A copy of an “Enrollment Certificate with GPA” obtained from the UT Austin Office of the Registrar with the application (the fee is $5.00). Non-submission of this document results in disqualification.
  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member or supervisor (volunteer or paid work, former or current).
  • A brief essay of no longer than 1000 words. The essay should address how the scholarship will benefit your academic studies and career aspirations, describe your personal initiative and leadership qualities as evidenced by your achievements, community service and/or campus activities, your current sources of financial support, and your career plans after college.

Application criteria and point system:

  • GPA (10 points).10 pts. = 3.67 GPA or better; 5 pts=3.3 GPA – 2.67 GPA; ﹤2.67 GPA = 0.
  • Honors received (5 points).  5 pts = Excellent (3 honors or more); 3 pts = Very Good (2 honors);  1 pt = Good (1 honor).
  • Sources of financial support-family, employment, scholarships (5 points).  5 pts = Excellent, shows strong personal initiative; 3 points = Very Good; 2 pts = Average.

The Jeannie Hunter Hackett Memorial Scholarship ($2000) is awarded to an outstanding Latin American undergraduate, junior or senior, at the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). The selection process is based on academic achievement in Latin American Studies, honors received, level of community/campus activities, and likely impact of the scholarship on academic studies and career goals, including financial need. In reviewing applications, each criteria is awarded points, for a maximum of 35 points. A minimum of 25 points is required for consideration. The scholarship winner will be notified on or before March 31, 2018 via email.

Required, in addition to the online application:
